CHAPTER ELEVEN

p. 75

John – The idea of John Hyrcanus being the messiah is amazingly disputed by some historians merely because the surviving traditions don’t say so explicitly. No one disputes that his son Jonathan was hailed as the messiah; I happen to think he is the historical figure behind “Dositheus.”

Mary the mother of Christ - See above Cf Shenouda Mark the Evangelist 9 “Mark was raised in a religious family, many of its members were the acquaintance to Lord Christ Himself. His mother was one of the "Marys" who followed Christ. The believers gathered and prayed at her house, at the time of the Apostles. [Acts 12:12] She was a reverend woman and highly regarded by the early Christians. His father was Artistobolos.” The Marqionites interestingly read the gospel in a particular manner where it was clear that Jesus did not have a mortal mother. Tertullian Against Marcion AM 4:10 “Concerning the Son of man our rule is a twofold one: that Christ cannot lie, so as to declare Himself the Son of man, if He be not truly so; nor can He be constituted the Son of man, unless He be born of a human parent, either father or mother.” They read for instance Luke 10:25f as if Jesus “testifies Himself to His not having been born, when He asks, "Who is my mother, and who are my brethren? In this manner heretics either wrest plain and simple words to any sense they choose by their conjectures, or else they violently resolve by a literal interpretation words which imply a conditional sense and are incapable of a simple solution as in this passage. We, for our part, say in reply, first, that it could not possibly have been told Him that His mother and His brethren stood without, desiring to see Him, if He had had no mother and no brethren. The Coptic emphasis that Mark’s mother was Mary also helps mediate the rift – there never was a “Mary the mother of Jesus” only a “Mary the mother of Christ” who was Mark’s mother because he was the original messiah of the Christian tradition; Jesus was God.

Mary Salome - mother of John the beloved disciple who according to the Copts was also called Mark. See above

you have received only an imperfect reflection - Tertullian AM 4:1 “These [i.e. the gospels] all start with the same principles of the faith, so far as relates to the one only God the Creator and His Christ, how that He was born of the Virgin, and came to fulfil the law and the prophets. Never mind if there does occur some variation in the order of their narratives, provided that there be agreement in the essential matter of the faith, in which there is disagreement with Marcion.” Ibis 4:10 “Concerning the Son of man our rule is a twofold one: that Christ cannot lie, so as to declare Himself the Son of man, if He be not truly so; nor can He be constituted the Son of man, unless He be born of a human parent, either father or mother."
It is interesting to note that the actual title “Christ” never appears in the earliest surviving manuscripts of the gospels see Embry “In Vaticanus and Sinaiticus it is not possible to discover how Jesus' main title (Christ) was spelled. A scribal device called "nomina sacra" was employed as a emphatic technique to highlight special words. The highlighted words were shortened. Because of this, the scribes left out the main vowel every time. Most Greek editions restore the vowel as an iota ("i").” The first appearance of the specific term “Jesus Christ” appears in the writings of Polycarp the man who established the Catholic canon. Notice the dogged coupling of the two previously separate terms “Jesus” and “Christ” in Polycarp’s forged epistles of Ignatian (see my Against Polycarp for more information.”

squeeze me and family out of the picture entirely - Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of this Markan theology is that both the Marqionites and the heretical community of Mark agreeing that Jesus was not the messiah. For the Marcionite emphasis see Tertullian’s (AM 4:36) comments on the Marcionite gospel that “Why then did the blind man, on hearing that He was passing by, exclaim, "Jesus, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me? " unless he was considered, in no uncertain manner, to be the Son of David (in other words, to belong to David's family) through his mother and his brethren, who at some time or other had been made known to him by public notoriety? "Those, however, who went before rebuked the blind man, that he should hold his peace" ... even if you could show me this, still (the blind man) would more readily have presumed that they were ignorant, than that the Lord could possibly have permitted an untrue exclamation about Himself ... Surely He could not have first removed this man's blindness, in order that he might afterwards cease to regard Him as the Son of David!"

The Jews still call me “John” to this day - Shenouda, Mark the Evangelist p. 8 “St. Mark was a Jew from the Levite Tribe (1), he preached to both Jews and Gentiles, but mainly among the gentiles. He had two names, "John", is the Jewish name and "Mark", is the gentile one. Mark became his distinctive name.” In the Talmud Marcus Julius Agrippa is called “Johnny” or Jannai in several places including a reference almost universally recognized by scholars as pertaining to Marcus Julius Agrippa Yebamoth 61a comments on the mishnah about a priest who “betrothed a widow and was subsequently appointed high priest, may consummate the marriage” which references Joshua b. Gamala who “bretrothed Martha the daughter of Boethus.” “The king” it says “appointed him high priest and he nevertheless consummated the marriage.” The story which comes from R. Joseph in the Talmud however identifies “a conspiracy here” because “R Assi, in fact, related that Martha the daughter of Boethus brought to King Jannai a tarkab of denarii before he gave an appointment to Joshua b. Gamala among the High Priests.” The editors of Soncino write “Jannai is often employed in the Talmud as a general patronym for Hasmonean and Herodian rulers. Here it stands for Agrippa II, v. Josephus Antiquities XX, 9, 4, and Derenbourg, Essai, pp. 248ff.”
